One thing i do is i train with my my tools of the trade as weapons. They are with me all day and are in my vehicle and shop..i am a painting contractor..my roller poles are 3 ft and open to 5 ft. my high ceiling pole is 6 ft and opens to 12 ft. My roller handles, putty and patching knives, hammers, etc..can all be used to protect. a sheet of 60 or 80 grit sandpaper folded up in the hand, sneak that across the eyes can buy one time to evade. a squirt of paint thinner, denatured alcohol, or laquer thinner in the eyes will also buy one enough time to escape..

I like the fact that a beginner’s mind represents a level of innocence with respect to learning. It does not mean that a person is not proficient in martial arts but rather that a person accepts teachings and observes from the environment without preconceptions. Thanks for sharing this post.

You look at his eyes, his body language, his walk, which can give you an idea how athletic he is and how coordinated. Also his tone of voice and attitude. Also if his voice escalates and he steps back with usually his right foot, this could indicate he is ready to throw a punch.

G'day Mark,

I think I read somewhere in the bujinkan: "If you don't know yourself, you'll never win. If you know yourself and your enemy, you cannot fail."

It is important to realise an attacker follows this rule to.

The attacker is likely to want to control the situation as much as they want to control you. My experience is I didn't always know when I was going to be attacked so now I am always learning as much as I can about wherever I am to avoid being caught unaware again.

If you have time to get into a stance when you are attacked it is definitely ideal. But practicing a stance is often neglected because it is a bit boring practicing going in and out of a stance. But if you practice, then when you really need to go into a stance, when a self defense situation arises, you won't think about it, and you will just automatically go in to it. That's when all your hard work will pay off.

I think another foundation of traditional martial arts that is indispensable is character. You can call it inner strength as well. I think it is indispensable because if you only have physical strength, then what do you have when that goes away? Nothing. You have nothing to fall back on if you dont have inner strength.
